When we invest, we’re generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. To wit, the ZEAL Network share price has climbed 27% in five years, easily topping the market decline of 9.5% (ignoring dividends).
So let’s assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they’ve moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

To quote Buffett, ‘Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace…’ One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company’s share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last half decade, ZEAL Network became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we’d expect the share price to be up.
The company’s earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It’s fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of ZEAL Network, it has a TSR of 64% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder returns.
A Different Perspective
While it’s certainly disappointing to see that ZEAL Network shares lost 2.0% throughout the year, that wasn’t as bad as the market loss of 4.7%. Of course, the long term returns are far more important and the good news is that over five years, the stock has returned 10% for each year. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. It’s always interesting to track price share performance over the longer term. But to understand ZEAL Network better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example – ZEAL Network has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
