US authorities have imposed new sanctions on the Russian FSB, a senior White House official told reporters. According to him, similar actions are expected concerning “other objects and people”, measures are being developed, it is indicated in a press release published on the US Treasury website.
“We are announcing sanctions against the Russian Federal Security Service responsible for or participating in, directly or indirectly involved in or responsible for ordering, controlling, or otherwise administering the unlawful detention of United States citizens,” a senior White House official said.
According to him, the decision to impose sanctions was prepared long before the arrest in Russia on suspicion of espionage from the American journalist Evan Gershkovich.
The representative of the American administration blamed the FSB for its repeated participation in the arrests, investigations and imprisonment of Americans.
Earlier, US State Department deputy press chief Vedant Patel said the White House intended to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia. Besides sanctions against Moscow, export controls will continue to operate, he said.
